The BMW X7 is the largest vehicle ever built by BMW, but that doesn't mean you will be sacrificing an iota of the high-end performance you have come to expect from the storied German brand. If you want a level of refinement and high performance that you simply cannot find anywhere else, combined with plenty of interior room for all of your passengers or anything else you need to take with you, then the X7 is the best option on the market.

There are a few different trims to choose from with the X7, depending on just how much power you want to have packed into your large Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). Within those three basic trims, you then have plenty of packages and options to choose from, so you can make your BMW X7 into exactly the vehicle you need, with everything you want. While there are some other large, luxury SUVs available from other manufacturers, none of them can offer the incredible driving experience that the X7 brings to the road and puts at your command. Whether your primary concern is interior luxury, power, and performance, or amazing safety features - or all of the above - the BMW X7 has you covered.

What Is the BMW X7?

First introduced for the 2019 model year, the X7 completed BMW's diverse lineup of SAVs. The original SAV was the midsize X5 back in 1999, but while BMW introduced a range of smaller compact models over the years to complement the X5, it wasn't until the X7 that they built something bigger. But as they say, good things come to those who wait, and the X7 was well worth waiting for.

To start with, the BMW X7 is a large SAV, which means it has three rows of seating standard and gives you a lot more space overall than the X5. In particular, the increased size means that your passengers in the second and third rows of seating will have more room to stretch out in than in the smaller BMW SAV models. The large size also gives you plenty of space for cargo, which can be helpful when you want to load up for a weekend getaway or enjoy a long road trip with the family.

The X7 is also filled with high-end luxury features, as befits the top vehicle in the BMW family. Adjustable height air suspension makes for an incredibly comfortable ride, while the premium cabin materials make for a truly luxurious experience. Modern technology is present in the expanse of screens stretching across the dashboard and can also be seen in the high-end sound system and rear-seat entertainment options. From top to bottom, the X7 is an exclusive vehicle for the discerning driver.

While the X7 is designed as the ultimate family vehicle, with comfortable seats, plenty of cargo room, and even an impressive 7,500-pound maximum towing capacity, that doesn't mean the traditional BMW high-end performance was neglected. Powered by either TwinPower Turbo inline-6 or an even more capable TwinPower Turbo V8, this luxurious family car is capable of keeping up with sports sedans and roadsters. Plus, the performance-oriented all-wheel drive system perfectly balances fun and safety, proving equally adept at high-speed cornering or handling icy mountain roads.

The 2021 BMW X7

For 2021, there are three different trims available for the X7 - but they aren't the same trims available from last year. The less popular xDrive50i was dropped from the base lineup, now giving you the choice between the xDrive40i with its 335-horsepower inline-6 engine and the M50i with its 523-horsepower V8. However, a new trim has been added that brings even more exclusive features and performance. The ALPINA XB7 is a collaboration between BMW and ALPINA that equips the X7 with a 612-horsepower ALPINA V8 engine and unique finishing touches from the famous luxury tuning house.

Despite being the base model, the 2021 X7 xDrive40i is still filled with luxury and performance features. It's TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder engine has enough power to propel it from 0 to 60 in just 5.8 seconds, and the standard all-wheel drive means you can drive securely in any weather or terrain. Standard features include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, matching 12.3-inch central information display, and a ten-speaker HiFi sound system. You will also enjoy standard 16-way power front seats with optional Marino leather upholstery, four-zone climate control, and a panoramic power moonroof.

For a more performance-oriented take, choose the M Sport Package with black exterior trim, 21-inch alloy wheels, and sport seats. Or select the Executive Package and enjoy maximum luxury with larger Panoramic Sky Lounge LED roof, heated and cooled cupholders, soft-close automatic doors, and more. Don't forget the factory Trailer Hitch to enable the vehicle's full 7,500-pound towing capacity if you plan on pulling a boat or camper with your X7.

The next step up is the 2021 X7 M50i, which is built for performance from the start. Not only does this trim incorporate all of the sport-inspired features of the M Sport Package, it also houses a standard TwinPower Turbo V8 engine that can launch it to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. The standard 22-inch wheels with wider rear tires also provide improved handling in all circumstances. But performance is not the sole focus of the M50i, as this trim also includes improved luxury features such as standard 20-way power front seats and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon Surround Sound Audio System.

Like the starting trim, the M50i also has a variety of options and packages available to customize your SAV to your personal preferences. For instance, the Luxury Seating Package includes ventilated leather seats with micro-perforations as well as massaging seats for the driver and front passenger. On the other hand, the Driving Assistance Professional Package adds BMW's Active Driving Assistant Pro, an innovative suite of safety technologies that use cameras and radars to provide braking and steering support in emergency situations. Of course, these are only two of the many options available to make the 2021 X7 M50i a perfect high-performance family SAV.

The final trim is the all-new 2021 ALPINA XB7. Instantly distinguishable by its exclusive exterior chrome trim, stylish five-spoke chrome wheels, and quad exhaust system, the ALPINA XB7 is far more than an appearance package. Although based on a BMW X7 shell, the XB7 is completed by ALPINA's own artisans and includes several unique touches beyond the significantly more powerful ALPINA Bi-Turbo V8 engine. Inside the cabin, you will be greeted by your choice of three exclusive ALPINA interior trims, ALPINA badging, and all the best features of the two BMW trims.

Customization options include nine different upholstery choices, ranging from black to ivory white. One particularly stunning choice is the combination of Ivory White and Night Blue, but all nine options use supple Merino leather for a truly premium feel. Optional five-zone automatic climate control gives the third-row passengers their own personal temperature setting, and the available seatback entertainment screens include a rear iDrive Controller and access to the built-in navigation system, audio system, and even phone calls. Finally, for a premium touch, you can select the impressive 1500-watt Bowers & Wilkins 20-speaker sound system with concert-grade audio.

BMW X7 vs the Competition

Although it might feel a bit unfair to call any other large SUV out there "competition" for the incredible BMW X7, there are a few models that do their best to compete. However, we would still choose the X7 every day, thanks to its superior performance and better selection of high-end features and technology. Still, there are competing three-row luxury SUVs, such as the Mercedes-Benz GLS, the Audi Q7, and the Lexus RX, that seek to provide a bit of sporty performance and could be considered fair competition. But how do models such as these really stack up when compared to the latest SAV from BMW?

Let us consider the Mercedes-Benz GLS for a moment, and see what kind of power it has to offer, compared to the BMW X7. The GLS has two different engines available, compared to the three you can choose from with the X7, and they both fall short in terms of power. Consider the most powerful engine in each model; the Mercedes GLS 580 has a V8 engine with 483 horsepower, while the BMW X7 M50i sports 523 horsepower. Sure, you could upgrade to the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 and enjoy 603 horsepower - but that's still less than the 612 horsepower of the ALPINA XB7.

It is not much of a competition, and the other large, luxury SUVs tend to go the same way. For example, the Audi Q7 55 TFSI only has a six-cylinder engine with 335 horsepower, and even the "high-performance" Audi SQ7 is limited to 500 horsepower from its V8 engine. While that might be fine against other SUVs, with the more powerful engines available from BMW and ALPINA, you can easily get a lot more power and greater performance with the X7. The Lexus RX is even further behind and doesn't even have an eight-cylinder option. Its top engine, a 3.5L V6 hybrid, is limited to just 308 horsepower. In short, no other luxury three-row SUV can provide performance that competes with what the BMW X7 has to offer.

Inside, you see a lot of the same issues, with other manufacturers doing their best to try to keep up but ultimately falling short of BMW's superior design and engineering. For example, the Audi Q7 only comes with a 10-inch touchscreen display, and the Lexus RX has 10-way power seats, while the BMW X7 features a 12.3-inch infotainment screen and 16-way power seats standard. These kinds of differences are found throughout these vehicles, showcasing time and again why the X7 is the superior option over anything the competition has to offer.
