A group of 2019 BMW EVs are shown from a high angle parked on an airstrip.

As electric vehicles (EVs) grow in popularity, BMW is leading the pack. The first BMW EV, the compact i3, arrived back in 2013 and is still in production today. However, as EV technology continues to improve, BMW is forging ahead with a new generation of larger, more powerful, and more luxurious EV models. The all-new i4 Gran Coupe and the iX sports activity vehicle represent the next step as BMW pushes towards an electric future. With long-range and incredible acceleration, these two models are a futuristic take on the ultimate driving machine.

Modern BMW EV models offer all the performance and features you would expect from a German luxury car, with the added convenience of electrical power. With no need to stop at gas stations, reduced maintenance requirements, and a quieter cabin, electricity and luxury go hand in hand. Plus, you can enjoy a high-performance vehicle without worrying about the harmful environmental impact of a powerful gasoline engine. But unlike cars from other EV manufacturers, slipping behind the wheel of a BMW EV is not an alien experience - instead, you will be greeted with the same traditional luxury features expected of any high-end vehicle. The i4 and iX may be powered by electricity, but they are pure BMW.

2022 BMW i4

Based on the sleek and powerful BMW 4-Series gran coupe, the BMW i4 is a capable and comfortable electric sports sedan. Its eye-catching design blends the modern lines of the sporty 4-Series coupe with the practicality that comes from a four-door sedan, giving you the best of both worlds. Even better, this car's fastback design conceals a rear liftgate, giving you nearly SUV levels of cargo space. The i4 also boasts traditional BMW styling, only revealing its electric nature when you look closely at the solid grille panels. If you are looking for a modern take on the classic BMW sports sedan, the new i4 is the model for you.

The i4 is available in two different versions, starting with the base eDrive40. This rear-wheel drive model offers similar performance to the gasoline-powered 430i and is a seamless upgrade from a current 3-Series or 4-Series car. If you want more performance, then the i4 M50 will fill that desire. The M50 is the first all-electric BMW M, and its powerful all-wheel drive system gives it better acceleration than a BMW M4 Competition. Both of these capable cars more than live up to the BMW name, providing all the performance and luxury you demand.

  • 240 to 300 miles of estimated range
  • 335 to 536 horsepower
  • 3.7 to 5.7 second 0-60 time
  • Rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive

Performance

The BMW i4 eDrive40 combines a large 81.5 kWh lithium-ion battery with electric rear-wheel drive to produce a reliable and exciting driving experience. The exceptional battery capacity of the i4 gives it an estimated range of 300 miles, making even long road trips a breeze. The battery can be fully recharged in under eight hours from a home charging station, while a public DC fast charger can top off the battery and have you back on the road in a matter of minutes. The total drivetrain output for the eDrive40 is 335 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, giving it a 0 to 60 mph time of just 5.5 seconds. If you enjoy the performance of your gasoline-powered 3-Series or 4-Series, the eDrive40 will more than live up to your expectations.

However, if you have experienced the performance of a BMW M car and desire that same extreme thrills from an electric vehicle, then the i4 M50 is the way to go. This high-performance model adds a second electric motor to the front axle for a total of 536 horsepower and 586 pound-feet of instant electric torque. The use of all-wheel drive also reduces oversteer and provides additional traction when cornering or in bad weather. The 0 to 60 mph time for the M50 is a lightning-fast 3.7 seconds, making it a fraction of a second faster than the recently redesigned M3 Competition and M4 Competition models with their turbocharged six-cylinder engines. The M50 may be an EV, but there is no doubt that it is a true M car.

Luxury

The interior of the i4 is familiar yet modern. You will find all the BMW luxury features that you are familiar with, but the technology has been upgraded to provide even greater functionality. The dashboard now hosts a massive 12.3-inch digital instrument panel side-by-side with an even larger 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen. With updated graphics and features, this digital dash will present more information than ever before, helping you wring more performance out of your car on back roads or enjoy a higher level of convenience when commuting.

Aside from the updated technology, the interior of the i4 is a traditional BMW with all the luxury features that you have come to expect. From the comfortable leather seats with power adjustment to fit your body perfectly to the automatic climate control system, this is a comfortable luxury car that will turn every drive into a relaxing experience. The four-door design also means that your back seat passengers will be just as comfortable, and the liftback design means that you won't have to settle for an SUV just because you need cargo space. Overall, the i4 is an excellent design for anyone seeking a luxurious electric vehicle from a renowned manufacturer.
A newer BMW EV, a 2022 BMW iX xDrive50, is shown rounding a corner with a lake and mountains in the background.

2022 BMW iX

The BMW iX is the first all-electric sports activity vehicle. Similar in size to the popular BMW X5, the iX brings a new level of performance, luxury, and utility to the EV segment. The roomy interior of this electric SUV makes it the perfect family vehicle, but it also offers a level of performance that will leave many sports cars in its dust. If you are in the market for a luxurious vehicle that can do it all and never needs to visit a gas station to refuel, then the new iX should be at the top of your list.

The iX is being launched with a single version - the xDrive50. This powerful model comes with standard all-wheel drive and boasts an estimated 300 miles of range. However, an even more capable M60 high-performance variant is expected to join the lineup in the near future. With futuristic looks inside and out, the iX is the most modern vehicle in the entire BMW lineup and brings an even higher level of technology and luxury to the already market-leading brand.

  • 300 miles of estimated range
  • 516 horsepower
  • 4.6 second 0-60 time
  • All-wheel drive

Performance

The instant torque provided by electric motors means that the iX puts down some incredible performance numbers for a sports car, let alone a comfortable all-wheel drive family vehicle with tons of cargo space. With no less than 516 horsepower, this sports activity vehicle is capable of launching from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds. That's considerably faster than the 5.3 second time of the gasoline-powered X5 xDrive40i. We expect the upcoming iX M60 will boast numbers equal to or better than the X5 M with its TwinPower Turbo V8 engine.

When it comes to range, the iX can travel an estimated 300 miles on a single charge thanks to its massive 113 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. With this much range, you can drive confidently no matter where your travels take you. If you are on a road trip, plugging into one of the hundreds of available DC fast chargers will top off your battery to 80% in just 40 minutes or less - and unlike a gasoline car, you can let your iX recharge while you are sightseeing or enjoying a meal. BMW has also made home charging easy, and the easily installed BMW Wallbox Level 2 charger will let you start every day with a full battery and 300 miles of range without ever visiting a public charging station.

Luxury

The iX offers all of the luxuries that you would expect from any BMW model. However, it does so in a high-tech and environmentally-friendly manner. Not only is the vehicle built using 100% renewable energy, but its premium interior is filled with sustainable material such as olive leaf tanned leather and floor mats made from recycled plastics. As you relax into the plush seats, you can enjoy knowing that BMW has made every effort to reduce your environmental footprint without sacrificing an iota of luxury. The iX interior also contains some unique design touches, including hardwood trim and faceted crystal controls, giving it a slightly futuristic touch to complement its traditional luxury features.

Another futuristic touch is the expansive digital displays stretching across two-thirds of the front dash. These high-definition screens replace the old-style instrument cluster and infotainment, providing a thoroughly modern and easy-to-use interface to access all of your vehicle's advanced functions. From switching between drive modes to simultaneously displaying navigation and entertainment information, the new screens in the iX are a real step forward and will likely soon find their way into BMW's other models. Of course, the iX offers far more than large screens, and its long list of tech features matches any other vehicle in its segment.

A black 2021 BMW i3 is shown from the side parked in a modern lobby.

2021 BMW i3

The i3 was BMW's first EV and remains a solid choice for city drivers. While it lacks the raw size and power of the i4 and iX, the i3 is a nimble and low-cost option that makes an excellent commuter vehicle. The futuristic design includes rear-hinged coach doors for the second row, opening up the entire side of the car for easy access. Meanwhile, the rear hatch and folding rear seats give the i3 a surprising amount of cargo space for those times when you need to bring home larger items after work.

There are two distinct powertrains available for the i3: a pure EV and an EV with a small gasoline range extender. While the standard EV has more than sufficient range for daily life, the range extender gives more freedom for the occasional long-distance trips. Both powertrains are also available in a higher-performance version that ups the horsepower and includes larger wheels and tires for enhanced handling.

  • 153 miles of battery range
  • 168 to 181 horsepower
  • 7.2 second 0-60 time
  • Rear-wheel drive

Performance

Every version of the i3 comes with the same 42 kWh lithium-ion battery pack mounted under the floorboards. However, unlike other small EVs, the i3 is actually rear-wheel drive with a rear-biased weight distribution. The available range extender is also mounted in the rear of the car rather than under the hood. These design choices improve overall handling and balance, similar to a rear-engine sports car. The i3 is also constructed with a unique carbon fiber chassis riding on a steel frame, making it incredibly strong and lightweight.

The i3 battery pack provides 153 miles of range, which is more than sufficient for city life and the occasional short trip. Recharging that battery can be conveniently handled at home with any standard wall socket or a BMW Wallbox, which will recharge to 80% in just five hours. When the i3 is equipped with the optional range extender, the battery range drops slightly to 126 miles, but the overall range jumps to 200 miles, and the vehicle can be refueled normally at any gas station. With the battery depleted and the gasoline range extender running, the i3 gets 31 MPG. Total horsepower is 168 for the base models and 181 for the S models.

Features

The interior of the i3 is well-appointed and contains a variety of natural materials. From the renewable eucalyptus wood trim to the sustainable Kenaf fiber panels, this EV was designed to be environmentally-friendly inside and out. Of course, you will still find the traditional BMW commitment to luxury as well. From the advanced vehicle and key memory that saves all of your personal settings to the three-stage heated seats and automatic climate control, the i3 allows you and your passengers to ride in comfort.

Technology in the i3 includes a standard 6.5-inch high-resolution screen with an intuitive iDrive controller for ease of use. Upgrading to the Technology + Driving Assistant Package will allow you to relax a bit more on those daily highway commutes, thanks to features such as ACC Stop & Go, Active Driving Assistant, and Automatic High Beams. You will also get a navigation system with BMW ConnectedDrive Services, which takes the stress out of driving to new destinations. Other luxury features include the available 12-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system and BMW Parking Assistant for perfect parallel parking every time.
